Medicare Advantage in Florida: how it really works
The short answer: Medicare Advantage (Part C) is a private plan that replaces how you use Original Medicare. In South Florida, many plans have a $0 monthly premium and extras like dental, in exchange, you use the plan's network of doctors.
Who is Medicare Advantage a good fit for?
- ✓You want the lowest possible monthly premium.
- ✓Your doctors and preferred hospital are in the plan's network.
- ✓You like extras, dental, vision, hearing, gym memberships, OTC allowances.
- ✓You mostly get care locally in Miami-Dade or Broward, not while traveling.
If you travel often, split time between Florida and another home, or want any-doctor freedom, look at a Medicare Supplement first.
What does a Medicare Advantage plan cover?
By law, every Advantage plan must cover everything Original Medicare covers (Parts A and B). Most Florida plans go further:
- Prescription drugs (Part D) built into most plans.
- Dental, vision, and hearing allowances.
- Over-the-counter (OTC) benefits, a quarterly allowance for pharmacy items.
- Fitness programs like SilverSneakers.
- A yearly out-of-pocket maximum, something Original Medicare alone doesn't have.
How much does Medicare Advantage cost in South Florida?
Miami-Dade and Broward are among the most competitive Medicare markets in the country. That's good news for you:
- Premium: many plans are $0/month. You keep paying your Part B premium to Medicare.
- Copays: you pay set amounts when you use care, for example, $0 primary care visits, $25–$50 specialists, daily hospital copays.
- Out-of-pocket maximum: a yearly cap (often $3,000–$8,000 in network). After that, the plan pays 100%.
- Some plans give money back: "Part B giveback" plans reduce your Part B premium by a set amount each month.
The cheapest-looking plan is not always the cheapest plan. We add up premiums, your actual drug costs, and your expected visits before comparing.
HMO or PPO, what's the difference?
| HMO | PPO | |
|---|---|---|
| Network | In-network only (except emergencies) | Out-of-network allowed at higher cost |
| Referrals | Often required for specialists | Usually not required |
| Typical cost | Lower copays, more $0 premiums | Slightly higher costs for more freedom |
When can you enroll or switch?
- Turning 65: during your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period.
- October 15 – December 7 (AEP): switch or join any plan for January 1.
- January 1 – March 31 (MA OEP): already on Advantage? One switch allowed, or return to Original Medicare.
- Special Enrollment Periods: moving, losing coverage, or qualifying for Extra Help open extra windows.
Common Medicare Advantage mistakes to avoid
- Not re-checking your plan every fall. Networks, drug lists, and copays change every January 1. Last year's best plan may not be this year's.
- Enrolling for the extras. A dental allowance is nice; your oncologist being in network is essential. Prioritize medical coverage.
- Ignoring the drug formulary. One non-covered medication can cost more than a year of premiums.
- Enrolling through a national TV hotline. They may not know which Miami hospital systems each plan includes. Local help costs the same: nothing.
Medicare Advantage FAQs
Why are so many plans $0 premium in Miami?
Medicare pays carriers a fixed amount per member, and South Florida's huge Medicare population makes competition fierce. $0 premium is real, but you still pay Part B and copays when you use care.
Do Advantage plans include drug coverage?
Most Florida plans include Part D. Always check that your specific medications are on the plan's formulary, we do this for every client before enrolling.
Can I keep my doctor?
Only if your doctor is in the plan's network, and networks change yearly. We verify your doctors and hospital before recommending anything.
What if I'm unhappy with my plan?
You can switch each fall during AEP (Oct 15–Dec 7), or make one change Jan 1–Mar 31 if you're already on an Advantage plan. Call us, plan reviews are free.
