Questions we hear every day
Honest answers, in plain language. If yours isn't here, call, that's what we're for.
Working with us
Does it cost anything to work with you?
No, and this surprises people. Agents are paid by the insurance carriers, and your price is exactly the same with or without an agent; that's set by law. You get comparison, guidance, and someone to call at claim time, at no cost.
Are you a real local agency or a call center?
A licensed independent agency at 12145 NW 7th Ave in North Miami (NPN 17830305, verify us at nipr.com). You talk to a licensed local agent in English, Español, or Kreyòl, and the same person answers after you enroll, not a national hotline.
Which insurance companies do you work with?
We're appointed with multiple carriers, including Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Mutual of Omaha, and Foresters. Independent means we compare across them and recommend what fits you, not whoever pays best.
Will you pressure me to buy something?
No. We explain, put the trade-offs in writing, and you decide on your own time. Sometimes the honest answer is "keep what you have", we'll tell you that too. That's how we keep clients for years.
What do I need for a quote?
About 15 minutes: date of birth, ZIP code, your doctors and medications, and, for health plans, an income estimate. No documents needed for the first conversation. See what to have ready.
Medicare
When can I enroll in Medicare?
Your Initial Enrollment Period is the 7 months around your 65th birthday, 3 before, your birthday month, 3 after. Miss it and permanent late penalties can apply. After that, the main window for changes is Annual Enrollment, October 15 – December 7. Full timeline in our turning-65 checklist.
Advantage or Supplement, which is better?
Neither, they fit different lives. Advantage: all-in-one, network-based, often $0/month, usually includes drugs and extras. Supplement: any doctor who takes Medicare, predictable costs, higher premium. Your doctors, budget, and travel habits decide.
I'm still working at 65, do I have to sign up?
Often you can delay Part B without penalty if you have employer coverage, but the rules depend on the employer's size, and getting it wrong is expensive. This one's worth a 10-minute call before you decide anything.
Can I switch plans if mine changed for the worse?
Every fall during Annual Enrollment (Oct 15 – Dec 7), yes. Advantage members also get January 1 – March 31. Certain events, moving, losing coverage, plan leaving your county, open windows any time of year. Ask before assuming you're stuck.
Life insurance
How much does life insurance really cost?
Less than people guess, often 3× less. A healthy 35-year-old gets $500,000 of 20-year term coverage for roughly $25–30/month. Rates rise about 8–10% per year of age, so today's price is the best you'll be offered. See 2026 rate tables.
How much coverage do I need?
Start with 10–12× your yearly income, add the mortgage and debts, subtract savings. We'll do this math with you in minutes, it's the first thing we check on every quote.
Can I qualify with diabetes, high blood pressure, or other health issues?
Usually yes. Carriers treat the same condition very differently, one may decline what another rates as standard. And final expense policies accept most applicants regardless. Don't self-reject; let us match your history to the right carrier.
Do I need a medical exam?
Often not. Many carriers approve healthy applicants from health questions and database checks in days, no needles, no clinic. It sometimes costs a few dollars more per month; sometimes nothing.
Isn't my life insurance through work enough?
Usually not: employer policies are typically 1–2× salary (families need 10–12×) and disappear when you change jobs, right when you're older and coverage costs more. Work coverage is a bonus, not a plan.
Marketplace / ACA health insurance
Did the subsidies end in 2026?
No. The temporary enhanced credits expired, but the original premium tax credit remains, most enrollees still qualify for help. What's back is the 400%-of-poverty cliff, which makes income estimates matter more. Details in our Marketplace guide.
When can I sign up?
November 1 – January 15 in Florida. Outside that: a qualifying life event (lost coverage, moved, married, new baby) opens a 60-day window, and Medicaid/CHIP enroll year-round. If you missed it, here's what you can still do.
I'm self-employed, what are my options?
The Marketplace was built for you. Your subsidy is based on your income estimate, premiums may be tax-deductible, and we can true things up mid-year when business swings. Bring your last tax return to the call.
Why did my premium jump this year?
The enhanced subsidies expired and many carriers repriced for 2026. But an auto-renewed plan is rarely the best-priced plan, and comparable plans often differ by $50–$200 a month. Fifteen minutes tells you if you're overpaying.
Your question isn't here?
Ask it the easy way. English, Español, oswa Kreyòl. No question is too small.
